On thin ice

Ice so thin it shatters when you breathe on it. The dog and I, after a moment’s hesitation, crashing through it with determination. The ice below. The insistent feeling that something is wrong when the foot crashes through the ice.

And then, kneeling, its stillness and fragility leave me breathless.

The dog meanwhile making happy trails.
